It Rained. We Stayed.

It poured on Sunday, the day of the Invisible Warriors’ family picnic.

Not a light drizzle. Rain. The kind that soaks through everything and gives you every reason to pack up and go home.

Sixteen individuals (women veterans and their families) showed up for Invisible Warriors’ summer picnic, and not one of them let the weather change the plan. They came with dishes to share — casseroles and sides and desserts, the kind of spread that happens when a group of people actually want to feed each other. IW brought the fried chicken and drinks. The sky brought the rain. And somehow, it was one of the best Sunday afternoons we’ve had.

That’s the thing about this community. It doesn’t need perfect conditions. These are women who’ve trained in the cold, deployed in the heat, and kept going when things got hard. A little rain on a picnic isn’t going to stop them from showing up for each other.

What struck me most wasn’t the food (though the food was excellent). It was watching people relax. Really relax. Veterans who understand each other in ways that don’t need a lot of explaining. Families who felt at home. Conversations that went long past when anyone was still eating.

That’s what Invisible Warriors is. Not a program or a service provider — a community where women veterans belong.

If you’ve been thinking about getting involved — as a veteran, a family member, a volunteer, or a supporter — this is your invitation. We gather, we show up for each other, and yes, sometimes we eat fried chicken in the rain.
